John Salter is a partner and wealth manager at Evensky & Katz/Foldes in the Lubbock, Texas office where he has worked with individuals, families, and institutions to meet their financial goals since 2010. He also serves as the chair of the firm’s planning committee which is responsible for the financial planning strategy across the firm.
Mr. Salter recently retired from a near 20-year career as a professor of financial planning at Texas Tech University. While a professor he taught classes in retirement planning, investment management, capstone, and many others. His research expertise is related to the simulation of various financial planning strategies including the firm’s cash reserve structure as well as the incorporation of reverse mortgages in retirement income planning. His work was published in the Journal of Financial Planning and referenced in publications such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Kiplinger’s Retirement Report, Bloomberg, and MarketWatch. He frequently presented at meetings of the Financial Planning Association, Retirement Industry Income Association, and the Retirement Income Symposium.
Mr. Salter is a member of the Financial Planning Association and is past president of the West Texas Chapter. Mr. Salter is also a member of the Rotary Club of Lubbock, previously serving on the club’s board of directors.
Mr. Salter is a Certified Financial PlannerTM practitioner. He earned both a PhD and a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning from Texas Tech University. He also earned an MBA and Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. In 2014, he was honored as one of the inaugural “Top 40 under 40” by Investment News and was honored as a Distinguished Alumni from the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University in 2018.
